May be you should.

China has 133 million hectares of forest. More than Indonesia. Of its total forest, 32 million hectares is plantations. More than all other developing nations combined.

In 1995, China was the world’s third largest importer of wood-based panels (plywood, fibreboard etc.) and its imports almost doubled between 1991 and 1995.

It was also the world’s third largest producer of paper and cardboard, accounting for 10% of the world’s production.

If you are interested in finding out more about Chinese forestry, one of the best sources of information is ’Forestry Economics’ magazine. The Forestry Economics and Development Research Center of the Chinese government edits and publishes the magazine in Chinese and an FAO regional forestry project translates it and distributes it in English.

Some paper included in the magazine’s most recent edition were:

* China’s Forestry Action Plan

* Chinese women and social forestry

* Bamboo and rattan development in China

* Current situation and development strategy of the Chinese plywood industry

* Social forestry and protection forests in Sichuan Province
