The sixth Global Landscapes Forum in Marrakesh, Morocco, brought together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to work together on planning climate action for sustainable development.

Held on the sidelines of the 22nd Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22), the Forum built on global momentum for a new climate and development agenda, based on commitments made under the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals.

At the closing plenary, on behalf of the German Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Economic Cooperation, State Secretary Jochen Flasbarth pledged his government’s support for the long-term future of GLF, including plans to host and support the establishment of a GLF secretariat in Bonn, Germany, from 2017 to 2020.

“You as scientists, experts and supporters of landscape research and landscape approaches are so relevant for addressing the sustainable development agenda” Flasbarth said.

“The Global Landscapes Forum undoubtedly is the global platform leading the debate on sustainable land use and sustainable forestry,” he added.

The GLF in Marrakesh was attended by more than 5,500 stakeholders in person and online, and engaged millions more via social media.

Peter Holmgren, Director General of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), announced an aspiration to introduce one billion people by 2020 to the landscape approach – and connect them in embracing it.

“We want to launch the new phase of the Global Landscapes Forum, where we will scale up and reach out, and in the next five years we hope to reach a billion people to be engaged and learn from the landscape approaches, to figure out solutions that are good for them in their landscapes,” he said.
